International Students

The new points-based immigration system has resulted in major changes in legislation relating to the recruitment of non-EEA nationals.

The vast majority of new graduates are covered by the following schemes:

  • Tier 1 - Post-study Workers (replaces International Graduates Scheme)
  • Tier 1 - Highly Skilled Workers (replaces Highly Skilled Migrant Programme)
  • Tier 2 - Sponsored Skilled Workers (replaces Work Permit Scheme)

As an employer, it is your responsibility to be familiar with the new legislation and to ensure that representatives sent to the fair are able to talk knowledgably about your organisation’s stance.  It may be useful to prepare a frequently asked questions document that your representatives can bring with them on the day and use to give accurate information to any non-EEA international students enquiring about employment opportunities.

Sheffield Universities Recruitment Fairs regrets that it cannot advise employers on the application of immigration legislation.  If you require information about the range of schemes currently available please refer to the following websites:

When completing your organisation profile for the fair we will ask you the following questions:

  1. Is your organisation a registered sponsor under Tier 2 of the new points-based system?
  2. Will you consider applications from new graduates applying under the Tier 1 Post-Study Work Scheme?
  3. Will you consider applications from graduates applying under the Tier 1 Highly Skilled Workers category?

Your responses will be used to help international students identify whether or not you will be able to consider them for employment.
